巴斯特·基顿于1895年10月4日出生于舞台间歇期，当时父母正随一个Medicine Show团（一种靠卖江湖假药为生的剧团）表演，父亲为爱尔兰和苏格兰血统，母亲是英国和德国的后裔。老基顿按照家里的传统给长子取名约瑟夫。巴斯特的名字是1897年他父母和Harry Houdini（哈里·胡迪尼，未来的逃脱术大师）加盟了一个叫Californian Concert Company的Medicine Show。在汽车旅馆里，Houdini目睹基顿从楼梯上一路摔下来却安然无恙，大叫这孩子真是一个“Buster”（结实的孩子）。关于此名字的来历也有不同说法，不过此后，基顿选择它作为自己的艺名却是无疑的。
基顿如他的名字，从小就特别耐摔打。据说1898年7月的一天，小基顿在父母演出的时候自己在后院逛，结果把右手食指插进了拧干衣服用的架子里，当时就被绞断了手指。医生马上为他做了截肢手术，切掉了一节手指。但是基顿醒来后，马上又跑出去用石头打桃子吃，却被石头打破了头，缝了三针。可是到了傍晚，小基顿又跑到窗口看旋风，结果被从二楼卷到了大街上，被路人捡了回来。自此以后老基顿决定不把小基顿留在家里，而是跟他一起上舞台。
不久之后基顿一家告别Medicine Show，开始加盟Vaudiville Show。开始基顿父母搞了一个Two Keatons节目， 不太成功，后来在别人建议下，把小基顿拉进来，取名叫Three Keatons，大获成功。在这个节目里，基顿一家利用小基顿天生的会摔跟头的本事，打造了一个家庭闹剧，高潮是老基顿抓起小基顿，准确的从舞台的一头一路扔到另一头，或者观众席里。为此基顿一家经常受到政府检查，以确认没有虐待儿童的情况。在这个节目里，基顿逐渐培养出了他面无表情（deadpan，或者叫stoneface）的喜剧表演风格。
由于演出的关系，基顿基本没有上过学，他唯一的一次小学经历只维持了一天，因为他用在剧团里学来的俏皮话回答老师，结果被赶出了学校。这也更加重的基顿内向的性格，但是没有上学并没有让基顿成为文盲，他在母亲的指导下学习，并且对机械产生巨大的兴趣。据他说如果不能表演，他会选择做土木工程师，这一点也表现在他影片中大量出现的机械装置上。
幼年基顿与父母1906年，基顿的父母加入了一个巡回剧团，只有11岁的基顿开始在Little Lord Fauntleroy剧目中扮演主要角色。1917年，基顿一家的演出因为父亲的不稳定性格散伙，基顿离开了父母，他加入了纽约的Winter Garden剧院准备出演The Passing Show。但是这时一个偶然的机会，基顿通过一个过去的杂耍剧团朋友，结识了喜剧演员Fatty Arbuckle（Roscoe Arbuckle），后者邀他试镜。于是基顿放弃了250美元周薪的演出，拿着40美元周薪跟随Fatty加盟了Comiques Films公司，从此结束了他的舞台表演，开始了电影生涯。
